World War II and Beyond

1943The U.S.S. New Jersey is put into active commission. It became a historical museum in 2001 and is located in Camden.Points of interest in history

1960Tiros I was developed in New Jersey.
1962Telstar I was developed by Bell Labs and launched on July 10. It was the first live television transmission across the Atlantic Ocean, from the United States to France.
1963The Ski Board was invented in Haddonfield by Tom Sims.
1976The first Casinos opened in Atlantic City making it the second location for legalized gambling outside of Las Vegas.
The Meadowlands Sports Complex also opens the same year.
1993Christine Todd Whitman becomes the first female Governor of New Jersey
